Building on our basics, we will construct 4 more complex books–
– working with ancient book structures from before printing–books that require little or no glue — and work into multi-signature bindings– good to use for sketchbooks, journals, painted books–as well as publishing longer projects.

 

Esther K Smith is the author of the best-selling HOW TO MAKE BOOKS and 5 other book arts books, including her recent MAKING BOOKS WITH KIDS (as seen in Bank Street’s Best Children’s Books) and Specimens of CHROMATIC WOOD TYPE Borders &c a reprint of a Victorian catalog of typography and ink, known as the Most Beautiful Book in the World. Artist director at Purgatory Pie Press, one of the longest running artist presses, she makes limited editions and artist books, collaborating with founder/hand-typographer Dikko Faust and other artists. PPP books are collected in public and private libraries throughout the world, including Metropolitan Museum, MoMA, Cooper Hewitt, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Tate. Esther taught artist books classes at Cooper Union for more than 15 years–and as a visiting artist at universities and art centers throughout the US, and also in Canada and the UK.
